Palestinian poll shows a rise in Hamas support, increase in anti-US sentiments

A wartime opinion poll among Palestinians shows a rise in support for the resistance movement Hamas, which appears to have ticked up even in the Israeli-bombarded Gaza Strip.

The survey also shows an overwhelming rejection of Western-backed President Mahmoud Abbas, with nearly 90% saying he must resign.

The survey was conducted from Nov. 22 to Dec. 2 among 1,231 people in the occupied West Bank and Gaza and had an error margin of 4 percentage points.

In Gaza, poll workers conducted 481 in-person interviews during a weeklong cease-fire that ended on December 1.

The survey provided insights into Palestinian views of the Oct. 7 al-Aqsa Storm Operation by Hamas and other Gaza resistance groups in Israel.

Despite the devastation, 57% of respondents in Gaza and 82% in the West Bank believe Hamas was correct in launching the October operation, the poll indicated. A large majority believed Hamas' claims that it acted to defend the al-Aqsa Mosque compound against extremist Israeli settlers and win the release of Palestinian prisoners.

According to accounts on social media, Hamas tied the three hostages into place and situated weapons around them. After this Hamas opened fire on Israeli troops from the location and the IDF returned fire. We will see what the reality is over the upcoming days. Accounts of events on social media can be true or false.

The Israel Defense Forces says that three Israeli hostages in Gaza were mistakenly identified as a threat and shot dead.

“During combat in Shejaiya (in northern Gaza), the IDF mistakenly identified three Israeli hostages as a threat. As a result, the troops fired toward them and they were killed,” IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari said at a briefing Friday.

“During searches and checks in the area in which the incident occurred, a suspicion arose over the identities of the deceased. Their bodies were transferred to Israeli territory for examination, after which it was confirmed that they were three Israeli hostages,” he added.

The hostages have been identified as:
  • Yotam Haim, who was kidnapped from kibbutz Kfar Aza
  • Samer Talalka, who was kidnapped from kibbutz Nir Am
  • Another male hostage whose family requested that his name not be published
The IDF began reviewing the incident immediately, Hagari said. “The IDF emphasizes that this is an active combat zone in which ongoing fighting over the last few days has occurred. Immediate lessons from the event have been learned, which have been passed on to all IDF troops in the field.”

“The IDF expresses deep remorse over the tragic incident and sends the families its heartfelt condolences. Our national mission is to locate the missing and return all the hostages home,” he added.

As expected, all sorts of variations of the incident involving the shooting of the hostages are coming out. I expect the anger and demands of the families of the hostages in Israel will drive a complete formal investigation of this shooting -- with a public report at the end of the process.

The latest information coming out is that the three hostages were shot while carrying a white surrender flag. This is different than the earlier claims on social media (which often are incorrect) that the hostages were tied up and used as bait by Hamas. In time, I expect the truth to come out.

sure, sure, as expected...... GWB posts bullshit, finds out it's bullshit, backtracks

Israel keeps recovering the bodies of hostages. At this point, it is likely the large majority of the remaining hostages have been murdered by Hamas.

At least we know who's doing some of the murdering anyway.... When you strip civilians to their underwear and call them terrorists, any stripped civilian will look like a terrorist.

All three were shirtless, with one of the figures carrying a stick with a makeshift white flag, according to the investigation.

The soldier, who believed the men moving toward him was an attempt by Hamas to lure IDF soldiers into a trap, immediately opened fire and shouted “terrorists!” to the other forces.
....
At that stage, the commander of the battalion, who was also in the multi-story building where the soldier had fired from, went outside and called on the forces to stop shooting.

Moments later, the third man came out of the building to which he had fled, and another soldier opened fire at him, killing him
