the GOP has remained ... neither racist, nor it's close cousin, favoritist.
Those republicans are leaving the party. They are abandoning it to the Trump racists. Going to be a big problem come November.
Looked at objectively, It could never be, and never would have been, reasonable to say the Republican Party of the North and the Democrat party of the South was not racist. During the Jim Crow era the Northern Republican, and especially the Southern Democrat, redefined what racism meant -- their attitude would have been that if there is no benign interpretation of the word, then certainly they can not be racist . There can be no better concise, nor more condescending, summary of the white man's view of the Southern black man during the Jim Crow era then that found in William Alexander Percy's autobiography "Lanterns on the Levee."*
...I would say to the Negro: before demanding to be a white man socially and politically, learn to be a white man morally and intellectually -- and to the white man: the black man is our brother, a younger brother, not adult, not disciplined, but tragic, pitiful, and lovable; act as his brother and be patient.

This book deserves a permanent place in American Literature. A beautifully written autobiographical account of the Southern aristocrats' viewpoint. Everyone should read this book regardless of their interests, nationality, or race. If we can learn where we have been and how we got to where we are, we can figure out which road to take going forward. (As a practical matter, Percy also gives us the most authentic recipe possible for the Mint Julip.)
