You have no idea what hyperinflation is. I see this term used out of context way too often.
Is that the privilege of living in a major us city with a "decent" job? Gonna tell you, in Middle Europe you are almost a king with such a salary. Would say, Projekt Managers and Programm Managers and board members get that amount here. Can´t imagine a Board Member living in a single room apartment eventho it´s funny to think about it
They don't. Or they rent a room and/or have government subsidies for housing.
The guy making $160k should just move. $160k for software in San Francisco sounds average or below average for that area. He could probably find a similar job in many other cities and keep more of his paycheck / pay less in taxes.
Update: Actually, I checked. Looks like median salary for software engineer is only about $80k for San Francisco. That sounds really low and bad considering what one can earn in places with much lower cost of living. Many software jobs in Colorado, Texas, Florida, and Nevada.

Yeah, big cities are expensive, there is nothing you can do about it.
Back to my first solution then. Forbid the foreigners buying up real estate in blocks drying up the existing real estate inventory!! It's NOT just the Silicon Valley or Bay area or San Francisco those big cities that has this kind of housing crisis; it's the ENTIRE California that is plagued by those foreigners overseas chalking up the prices by their massive buying.
They take away our jobs and then leave us homeless in our own country, that's ABSOLUTELY ridiculous!! I tell you once the foreign buyer tax was levied in Vancouver in Canada, the result was IMMEDIATE!! All the foreign buyers moved away! And all the real estate agents that were making millions at the expense of local residents all cried foul. And now since nobody is buying the properties, the price dropped down like 10%. All those idiots who bought, they all lost money!! LOL And finally a chance for local residents to own a home.

In California firefighters/ police officers are making $300k, no wonder only making $160k and living in SF to boot he is not happy.

What's the point? That you aspire to be guy 2 and also intend to commit adultery and cheat on your wife and look like shit? It all comes down to perspectives on life, mate. I highly respect a poor man who works hard to make ends meet for his family, is honorable, respected, and truthful over some rich schmuck and douche who lives a pretentious life style, catches every STDs lurking around the corner, is a total disgrace for his children and can simply not be trusted. Why trusting a man as outsider who cannot even be trusted by his own wife and children? And please don't come back and tell us the guy you know had no children, it's irrelevant whether your guy you knew fits my depiction perfectly, point is that he fits it pretty well.
