I was just in cost co and noticed how inefficient it is to take things out of the grocery cart to be rung up then put the stuff back into the cart. Why not a whole cart scanner? something that read the whole cart at once rather than one item at a time?? Does this exist? possible? business opportunity?

Walmart is working on Radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags, the items can be scanned from a distance.It was in the news a few years ago and consumer advocates are worried about privacy because Walmart could even scan items you bought elsewhere to keep track of your buying habits.
With these tags every item can have its own ID, not just the product. As an example they said every can of Coke could be traced back to the store it was bought from.

That doesn't solve anything. How long has your delivery been sitting around for?
Lineups in grocery stores is a problem. When I encounter a long/slow line I unload all goods that should be kept cold such as milk, eggs, cheese, meats, etc. onto the nearest shelve and let them deal with it, by that time those products should be thrown out.
Scanning the whole cart is needed in some of these big box retailers, especially for groceries.
With RFID, Walmart can scan your home, take inventory of your consumables. They can email you to let you know if you are low on any particular product.
