The alternative would be pairs trading ( eg short Nasdaq, long energy and/or mining ). This kind if approach would have worked really well in recent weeks.

Update - this strategy would continue to do well this week as these various groups take turns doing well. To get maximum profits though drop the shorts until later in the month and just let the metals / energy groups work against each other to somewhat reduce overnight risk. Seems to me far harder to be heavy short at this point and make a go of it.
