Not likely. I suspect the Democratic party is going thru what the Repubs went thru in the second term of Dubya.

Dysfunctional politics will continue to cause a splintering between the "establishment" party hacks and the disillusioned upstarts.

You can already see it taking place over the past few months.

Like so many other government programs have "worked"?

Look up reading and mathematics test scores for 17 year olds from before the dept of education was created and now. No change. And yet we're spending, including Pell grants, $70 BILLION a year on this one agency.

Dept of energy, a $27 billion + a year agency created in 1979 ostensibly to reduce our dependance on foreign oil.
How's that working for ya Duke?

BATF, a $1 billion a year agency that overseas three products that are (wait for it)...all legal in this country. What a colossal waste.

DEA and their $2.4 billion a year budget. And yet anyone can easily buy illegal drugs virtually anywhere in the country. What a colossal waste.

DHS a $59 billion a year agency that failed to stop the underwear bomber the shoe bomber the Ft Hood shooting the Boston bombers or the Navy yard shooter. What a colossal waste.

I could go on of course but either you "get it", or you just don't want to.

My hope is that you'll have Tea Party Republicans begin to gel with libertarians, and all those democrats that want things like a repeal of marijuana laws, etc and other socially liberal but still fiscally conservative individuals come together to form a serious libertarian or 3rd party alternative.
 
If the unions don't get an exemption, the dems will be crushed by obamacare, if not in 2014, 2016 for sure. ACA will not work as written, or there wouldn't be a prez providing exemptions for his pals, union bosses wouldn't be screaming for a fix or even repeal, and congress wouldn't be exempting themselves.

I actually hope for 3rd party to materialize. While I do vote democratic, there is tons that I do not like about the party.

I am a centrist so too speak.

As far as DHS, your argument is not totally proper. Yes, we do see the failures, but who knows how many attacks were prevented that we know nothing about.

Anyway, if GOP continues this course, it might blow up from within, and I will not be happy contrary to what you believe. Any system needs debate and check/balances.
