GOP Candidate Who Blamed Autism, Tornadoes on Gay Marriage Wins Primary

On Tuesday, Illinois Republicans opted to nominate Susanne Atanus as their party’s choice in the primary for that state’s 9th district by a margin of almost five percentage points. Earlier this year, Atanus drew attention by telling The Daily Herald newspaper that as a “God-first conservative Republican” she believes many of the plights of the last several decades, including droughts, tornadoes and diseases like autism and dementia are God’s punishment for gay marriage and legalized abortions.

“God controls the weather,” Atanus said definitively in January. “God is angry. We are provoking him with abortions. We are provoking him with same-sex marriage, gay rights, civil unions.”

Introducing the discovery of the GOP Lawmaker Principle: As the national electoral plight of Democrats increases, so does the incidence of stories about obscure state Republican lawmakers saying something stupid.... along with exGOPer posting these stories.

The “GOP Lawmaker” Principle: Why You See So Many Articles About Random Right-Wing Politicians
http://www.slate.com/blogs/weigel/2..._see_so_many_articles_about_random_right.html

This morning, the Huffington Post's Laura Bassett reported on audio obtained by Alliance for a Better Minnesota—audio that found state Rep. Andrea Kieffer dismissing paid-leave legislation as something that made women look "like whiners." The odds of a Huffington Post reader being represented by Kieffer, or living in Minnesota, were relatively small. But the story went large, and by 2:30 Minnesota time I had received a press blast from the Alliance telling me what Kieffer said. "Her comments have already gained national attention from the Huffington Post," wrote the progressive group.

This is as good a hook I'll find to describe what I've come to know as the the GOP Lawmaker Principle.

As the national electoral plight of Democrats increases, so does the incidence of stories about obscure state Republican lawmakers.

Right, Cons spouting bigoted stuff is so obscure!

And the GOP candidate mentioned in the thread is a national election candidate.

Everything is a conspiracy with you guys.

Yeah,Yeah Yeah..... because Slate is so well-known for being a right-leaning publication.

Who the fuck cares about Slate?

You said something about obscure state Republicans - a candidate running for a national office is not an obscure state Republican.

End of story.

Stop with the deflections and move on. There is no way you come out even in this debate.
