Bush is a Protectionist when it comes to our national Economy.
But when it comes to defending our very OWN borders, the guy has no problem letting illegal aliens in! Meanwhile, Congress just sits there and refuses to change the 14th Amendment, allowing any pregnant illegal alien to obtain FREE medical care and social services once her child is born on U.S. soil.

I'm not going to argue that Bush is my kind of fiscal conservative, but I'm in favor of the virtual destruction of the Federal Government. So most everyone is to the left of me on spending. However if you're closely following the budget debate, the budget is being roundly critisized by LIBERALS, for SPENDING TOO LITTLE!!

the pigs have always been pigs, maybe with different names: pharohs, emperors, pontiffs, lords, kings, czars, whigs, democrats, republicans, etc., etc.

there is no fact more proven than "power corrupts," and its corollary "the people allow it." why should history reverse course today?

that is the genius of the US Constitution - that, recognizing human nature, it divided power and pitted it against itself. the founders realized that the men who would seek power would never deserve it, so it forced them to constantly fight with other undeserving men to exercise it.

obviously those in power dislike this feature, hence the neverending movement to change it, from Marbury v. Madison to "gun control" to guantanamo and the "patriot" act.

the travesty occurring now is not the fault of the administration - which is only doing what comes naturally to anyone given too much power - but of a collusion of the other branches to allow it, and of a people that have allowed themselves to become too ignorant to notice.

Great post. You have perfectly distilled the genius of the Founders to a few sentences.

Focus group interviews with voters invariably come back with the news that voters are annoyed by "partisan bickering" and want their representatives to "work together to get things done" or some such nonsense. I think such polling accounts for the Bush "New Tone" strategy that required him to kiss up to Democrats as they ruthlessly backstabbed him.

If people truly understood our system, they would applaud partisan bickering, gridlock, attacks on one branch by another,etc. The disasters tend to occur when they are all in agreement.

of course i didn't come up with this.........not even endorsing it....but i am an ex-republican that is fed up with this "new" conservatism. and pssssssssssssst, i even censored part of it. just found it to be entertaining and thought i might share it with the other members.

if you go through the majority of my previous post i have always tried to credit/link all sources when possible.
 
Political relativism seems to have run amok on ET. I wonder if after 4 months of a Dean Administration (heaven help us), whether "Elitists" on this board will be posting diatribes about Howie's betrayal of the left. Sorry, folks, but our's is a system that demands compromise, even with one-party "control" in Washington. To offend no one is to do nothing. And to expect otherwise strikes me as hopelessly naive.
