Google Compliance

Google has revealed the measures it will take to comply with the European Commission's antitrust decision over its Android operating system (a decision that also involved a $5 billion fine, against which Google is appealing.) Google will now allow manufacturers to make phones that use non-Google versions of the operating system, even if they also make phones with Google's Android apps on them. Manufacturers will also be able to license Google's app suite without having to preinstall Google Search or the Chrome browser. Google

Google opens up. Google CEO Sundar Pichai openly discussed the company's controversial Dragonfly project - a plan to develop a censored search engine for the Chinese market. A coalition of European consumer organizations is filing complaints against Google, under the tough General Data Protection Regulation, about the company's tracking of people's location. The groups say Google "uses various tricks and practices to ensure users have [location-tracking] features enabled and does not give them straightforward information about what this effectively entails."
