Core strength is important, but not as important as rhythm, keeping your head down, hitting the ball straight, and being an ace from 175 yards in.

Learn to 'stick' the ball on the pin. That takes a big divot and an open club-face.
As for core strength, if I had to groom someone in their mid to late 40's, I'd find an agile, quick, former soccer player. With good eyesight. That's key on the green.
