I think Goldman Sachs is having the same problem successful mafia families eventually run into: they attract too much attention to themselves.

Playing dirty requires one to keep a small footprint, and with the collapse of Wall St in 2008, GS now stands alone and in the limelight. Everything they now do attracts unwanted attention.
 
Perception is everything.

If the market perceives GS won't step in front of their trades on the short side, watch out... you're gonna see bears humping bears to get to the table.

No more spankings... what GS suspended all program trading?

Perception. We'll see if it gets bought into.
