Uhm, at the end Rome didn't have a military.

They hired the Goths to defend the city. When the Romans could not pay the Goths the agree price they tried to assassinate the Goth leader. He marched on Rome with his armies and it was sacked.

Dont argue with it, Just trade it. That is the problem with Gold bugs. You cannot fight the manipulation etc. Just profit from the decline.
