Go away Irene!

Quote from Arnie:

I've been going down there since the late '60's. Frisco used to remind me of Cocoa Beach, Fla back then. The whole Outer Banks has changed so much, for the worse, I'm afraid. You just can't imagine how different it was. We used to have to take EVERYTHING, food, booze etc.. There was nothin there save for hotels and a few convenience stores. The whole area was dry back then too,....no bars. You could brown-bag at the Orville & Wilbur Hotel. Now parts of it look like Anywhere, USA. Me and some buddies go down at least twice each year to surf fish, but even that's changing as the Park service closes more and more of the beach to 4 wheelers. Here's my prediction. If the road gets cut in half this time, I don't think the feds will let them rebuild right away, like last time. Remember that?

All I will point out is the fact that beach erosion, and the hurricanes have destroyed what we once knew... I'm a Libertarian, strong conservative, small govt. guy, but at the same time, can literally see my favorite place being washed away. God has a plan. All we can do is follow it...

He got married on Hatteras and everything turned out great including the weather. We stayed at the Outer Banks Motel and the ocean was literally right in front of us. Makes me sad to wonder what will become of that area.

Tell your Son I said congrats no matter what comes of OUR (he's attached now), Island...

Mandatory evacuations for parts of nyc, translation - no residents allowed, probably be a shit load of burglaries though. Funny how that works, there'll be a cop around to keep you from returning to your home but thiefs can go anywhere.

That's a sore subject. We'd never have a place on the beach again after seeing what Isabel did to us. Never, ever again!

The Outer Banks is VERY narrow, and there just aren't any "safe" places to build once you get south of Currituck County.

I'm guessing that Ocracoke Island, Hatteras, Frisco, Avon, Buxton, Rodanthe, etc., will be harmed badly by this one. I pray my beloved Island stays strong!

Live in Elizabeth City. Thought seriously about buying a house between the highways over the summer because the prices keep going down, but decided against it.

There really is no safe place to build. Some places you can see the sound and the ocean at the same time from the highway. I love going there at least two weekends a month--only an hour from house to swimming in the Atlantic.

Expecting 80 MPH by Saturday afternoon, but am glad I will have to clean up the mess for only one house, not two.

Great place to rent, and to leave the stress of ownership to someone else.

Safe place to build = Northern Wisconsin. No hurricanes, no earthquakes, and maybe a tornado once every 20-30 years. Central Wisconsin has tornadoes almost everyday, but go north of Wausau and you're usually pretty golden.

Don't live in Wausau, though. There are a lot of gang activities there now with Hmong population.
