Interesting comment. A senator just said the $15 billion auto bailout will actually cause bankruptcies for the automakers, by delaying the proper restructuring actions.

I was actually looking at getting one or two new pick-up trucks (to use on some rural property that we have) - - - GM makes the best 4 wheel drive vehicle for this particular application, (and beat out Toyota in terms of features and realiability). Unfortunately the buying decision has been put on hold. - - I wonder if we would end up buying something built by a government directed company - - & shudder at the thought of US Postal Service or Dept of Motor Vehicles mentality. I wonder about the shape of their parts suppliers. Might go Toyota despite certain features that are better in the GM trucks. At least there's a good chance they'll be around in 5 years. Been reassured by those who say "Of course they'll be around and there are a lot of vehicles out there . . . they gotta service them." But, no one really has any idea what will happen. I'd feel better about it if I knew they were being reorganized under bankruptcy & were dumping poor management and the union work rules, and getting "lean & mean". - - -
I donât know why the government just does not buy the big 3 in bankruptcy. We can cut out the CEO pay. We can dump all the debt and make the workers federal employees and have no more auto union. The government can decide a fare wage and investment in better gas mileage cars. This is a losing business and its cheaper on tax payers doing it this way.
After a number of American cars, and the resulting dead engine, transmission or both at a predictable 100-130,000 miles or so, I am sticking with Hondas and Toyotas from now on.
