No, I'm talking about fog of war. If I were a cop on the scene in the maelstrom of an active shooting, I don't know how much comfort I would draw from seeing civilians running around pointing guns. Maybe if they were wearing "Good Guy" badges...

We cannot be selective in judging the fog of war excuse. Cops are always in tough situations when guns are drawn.They need to make quick judgments under very difficult situations, that's the job. Can't do it, go find other employment.
I'm making my assessment based upon local interviews I've watched from local news outlets. People interviewed say the shooting had stopped, the security guard had detained one of the suspects and had him held down waiting for police to arrive. The guard was also said the be wearing a jacket with "security" written on it. It seems to me like the cop was too afraid to make a good judgement, so he just came out of the car blasting. We should be able to expect police to make better judgments before they start shooting.
For those not familiar with the area, the town of Robbins is a Chicago, far south side hell hole, high crime, very violent and dangerous hood. The neighboring Midilothian police department was responding because the Robbins police department is very small and asked for assistance. It's a tough area, but again, that's the job they have chosen to do.
You're both right. It's a dangerous situation, but cops are supposed to be trained to respond appropriately and not just start blasting. These smaller PDs do not always get the best officers either. The you had the tragedy in Minneapolis where their Somali affirmative action policeman gunned down an unarmed white woman in a bathrobe in an alley who had called the police.
My point is you may see yourself as the good guy with the gun but to the cops you are a potential threat. There are some cops who are just itching to use their weapon and they know someone with a gun gives them that excuse.

Cops are jumpy these days because they are being ambushed and killed in greater numbers. Actually, less is more if they were to assess the situation and find out where the suspect is. I think the sheriff who was gunned down rushed in because of the gunfire in Borderline and Grill but, he should have assessed the situation, protected himself and fired back when he saw a good opportunity to fire back. He probably, got careless as a result. The shooter being a marine was trained to kill! In this case, there was no shooting happening so, even more reason to stand down while, being careful. Shoot when there is an imminent threat to your life.
And if handguns are banned, as they should be, cops would be safer.

Thanksgiving shooting at mall. Off-duty cop picking up extra work as a security guard shoots and kills good guy with a gun who was attempting to stop bad guy with gun. Bad guy with gun gets away in the commotion.

That's the thing that frightens. And this was an off-duty cop. What can then be expected from a typical civilian with a gun?
