If she were to die or retire prior to the election then the position should remain open until after January 20, 2021, unless Trump wins AND the Senate remains exactly the same as it is now. The pisspot scenario - and which is quite possible- is that Ruthie goes downhill so is not functioning or participating on the court but refuses to resign until after the inauguration.
