Getting a new dog -- ideas?

It's so sad our 15-year old shih-tzu is gone, I think Baron's right re getting another dog.

It would make my wife happy, and keep her from getting depressed over the loss of our first dog. If I don't get a new one, she was so close 24/7 with the old one, there's a very real likelihood that she'll get seriously depressed.

The wrinkle? I'm planning on divorcing her soon, after she gets over the loss. Not sure if a 2nd dog makes all this better or not. My heart tells me dogs always make the world better (they do!), just trying to figure out the timing. Open to ideas, thx.

Any favorite small-dog types? I like the pug from Men in Black, but she may not go for it :D

Current situation: incredibly sad house, missing/gone dog, house seems eerily quiet. Wife will likely go koo-koo if we just have huge silent house.


Option: Get a little furball to bring life and happiness back into house (and let wife keep dog once we split later in year). Dogs are so wonderful,.



hmm on 2nd thought its ugly af .... lol

You should consider a French Bulldog. Pugs are cute but every one I've ever come in contact with was pretty dumb.
 
Poodles. Incandescently smart, no shedding. Loyal, fierce and good with kids. The ideal dog. Newfies are also great but the avg lifespan is 9Y.

Dysmorphia is bred into the breed and they get issues with sinus infections, etc., and they are as dumb as soy.
 
Loki. Dad was best of breed at the National. Best to adopt over spending $11K on a puppy.

personally a big fan of Boston Terriers, similar size and great temperament, personality and companion dog. They love to play, but are also great at just hanging around.

A Newfie? Lol, he was asking for favorite small-dog types. They are certainly on the other end of that spectrum! One day some years ago I was walking towards a store from the parking lot and saw this guy with a brown one, and thought "Why is this guy standing outside the store with a shaggy brown bear"? The thing had to be over 150 lbs. But very sweet dog it was.
 
I'm out in left field as usual...

A pound dog, or one that someone is giving away. Finances are tough now...Many dogs to adopt.

Rescue shelter??

You don't have to deal with puppy training. Find one that bonds to both you and your wife. If it's a few years old, less time for it to live...Also less energy, that you have to walk out. After you get to a certain age, you may want the freedom to come and go without a dog.
