Get ready for $11 a pack cigarettes

Quote from Ivanovich:

Yes, because if I let it go on one, then it's a slippery slope.
So what you are saying is that thinking and good judgment should not get in the way of ideology. Because once thinking and good judgment take hold, there's no telling what might happen. Whereas an ideology is closed-minded and comfortably predictable. Fascinating to see where your values lie. :D

while agree that cigs are very very very bad, what happens when they tax it to extinction?

whats next?

burgers
soda
ramen noodles :)
porn

why should a guy who decides to screw his own health pay more taxes than the one who does not? especially when he needs to pay the treatment from his own pocket?

this whole thread is full of socialist weasels!

Quote from peilthetraveler:

Kind of makes it reasonable to drive to virginia or south carolina and pick up a few dozen cartons and save $100s of dollars. Or if you need a job, just buy a carton in S. Carolina, sell it for double in new york and you still have the cheapest prices in town.
The illegal sale of non-tax-stamped cartons and packs of cigarettes in New York is no different from selling drugs. Poor people are killing each other over them. This is no joke - I've discussed this with a couple of street toughs back in the Bronx a while ago. I'm sure that now it will be even worse.

Quote from Bob111:

wine and beer is cheaper than cigarettes! only in america!

The last time I checked, people who damage their livers by abusing alcohol aren't running around suing the makers/distillers of alcohol. But here you have these idiot cigarette abusers that are suing the tobacco companies all day long due to the cancer they now have after smoking 2-3 packs of cigarettes a day for 25 years. lol Wine/Beer was, is, and should always be cheaper than cigarettes. At least the people who drink take responsibility for the risks involved, and won't blame the alcohol makers for their own idiotic decisions, unlike many douche bag cigarette smokers.

No, that's what you are saying. You typed it.

Don't be angry at me because you hate cigarettes.

Because the guy who decides to screw his own health is also screwing other people's health as well.

Duh.

Why are so many people on this site which is a free market type of site so in favor of the government controlling lives?

I don't smoke, don't really like smoke (I avoid bars that are full of smoke) but I sure as hell rather have the choice than some bureaucrat who believes they know whats best for everyone else deciding what I may or may not do.

Who is going to be there when they come after what you like that may not be popular at the time?

The whole idea of freedom is the majority tolerating what the minority does. The Constitution is not in place for the majority of people because they do not need it as they can vote in or out anything they want.

You may be well advised to read the book "Road to Surfdom" as this country is headed down a socialist path.

Don't give away the power to tax to easily as that is the most effective method of control the government has over you.

I was raised on second-hand smoke. Why isn't it at least $20?

Actually I was thinking $20.00 per pack might be about right.
