As an American of Greek Heritage, I will say this:
As long as the new German ruler of the Greek islands has a pet monkey, I'm fine with that.
Sounds weird? Not really.
In the early 1900s, the Greek Royal Family was really from Northern Europe. King Alexander's mother was the daughter of the Kaiser. This isn't unusual, most of European royalty is related. For example, Prince Phillip of England, the Queen's husband, is from the Greek royal line.
Anyway, in 1920, King Alexander of Greece, grandson of the Kaiser in Germany, had a pet monkey that bit him. He died from the bite.
I think Greece should give the German people a pet monkey as a gift. Now that would be symbolic.
(Just a little trivia to break up the argument above this post)
