Why ?
Because people are basically gullible and believe the half truths and exagerations whether it be in the political or business arena.

Google should clean up their act by screening content. It is full of pages hosted by shysters. They have been on top but not for long if they are on an their usual " anything goes until caught out " mentality.

Gee.... how about those human DNA stolen from Africa. If not because of Africa, there will be no human population exist in other continents.

The difference is : you have no proof that the chinese didn't sell the technology, where a modern day patent violation is a clear case of using without permission.

Wall Street has no patent system and innovation is alive and well there. In fact, no patents (and years of protection) actually ENCOURAGES innovation because products are very easily copied and margins taken out and therefore there is a constant rush for new innovation.

I really don't see why we need patents for innovation. If you make TECHNOLOGY, you must bring out a better product next year to make someone buy it, patents or not. Patents only slow the innovation process because if you ever want to create a product you must dig through thousands of patents that could jeopardize your plans and it adds to development costs.

I think your logic is flawed here. If there were no patents, nobody would spend millions of dollars on innovation/R&D. Why would they? Just save the cash, wait for someone else to do it, and copy away for free. Patents and intellectual property are absolutely needed and must be protected.

Dunno about the States but here in the UK it costs a lot to have an agent patent your product on top of all the hard work of inventing something. It costs a load more to patent the product world wide.
Your troubles haven't ended there either. If someone rips off your idea you have to have a Microsoft sized treasure chest to defend your patent in Court. That is if you can find those responsible. And even if you can they suddenly have no money - Patents are applicable to big companies like drug companies. To junior in a shed in the garden. my advice is probably don't bother. The legal profession will pick you clean as a skeliton.

There is some advantage to first mover advantage and from developing specific knowledge of that new technology (every new technology must be perfected). As for copying someone else for free, that's exactly what Wall Street does, and the ensuing innovation is what keeps margins from falling once their product has been imitated.

Innovation isn't some sort of gift from corporations to society, it's necessary to compete against other firms in commoditized markets.

There's no denying that patents provide a strong incentive for developing new technologies, but what is there to say that incentive isn't already built in the marketplace?
