I agree. Normally a fuel economy run is the worst, but last night had some drama. I'm sure the crew chiefs employed your reasoning as to gaining or protecting their points position, but they could have looked at it another way. With Gordon out, they weren't going to lose ground to him, even if they rolled the dice and crapped out. Also, Johnson had messed up his stop and lost a lot of ground. It's been a while since Big Orange saw victory lane as well, plus the new points system rewards you for wins. Tough decision for Zippy. They probably made the right call, but they have to look at it as one that slipped away from them.
