Some Christian believers attempt somehow to embrace both traditions, but face the great dilemma: How can the command of Jesus to love our enemies be harmonized with killing our enemies?
There is no dilemma within the nature of God. The question, a symptom of the greatest lie, self-worship, implies that in some way God's actions and commands must meet the criteria and understanding of His creation. At the burning bush Moses asked God his name, God replied,
which there is no literal translation in any tongue is best translated... I AM, THAT I AM..... tell them I AM has sent you.
God, is and does as GOD is and does. His will and actions are perfect by decree, irregardless of our thoughts on the matter.
However, the fate of old testament civilizations that fell to the Israelites is no different than today. God will pass judicial sentence on the world, as the world has already been judged and found guilty. All of us at one time or another has sinned in some way, some small, others large, but all have some degree of "bad deeds" in their life. Which contrasted to the nature of a completely perfect,
again irregardless of our personal beliefs God, is in tolerable, as any sin by definition is not allowable in His presence. His Law, His Judgment is perfect by His own decree, there's nothing we can do about it.
And just like those ancient civilizations, who had foreknowledge of the Israelite Nation's advance, who's God had delivered them from and defeated the Egyptian army... had their opportunity to acknowledg and accept the God of Israel.
However, because of his love and compassion, He has given us a means of "pardon" for our debt of sin owed, that by placing our debt and sins upon his own Son.
This is the "Love" Jesus commanded us to share, To love one another as God has loved us. To pass along the Love that has been given.
God's Laws and Penalties will be done, but God's Grace allows us not only an escape, but actually inheritance, into what God has designed for His Son.
