Peloton Tread Plus: CPSC warns it can kill kids, pets; says stop using it 'immediately'

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission issued an "urgent warning" Saturday, telling people to immediately stop using the Peloton Tread Plus treadmill because of a potentially fatal risk to children and pets. The Tread Plus poses "serious risks to children for abrasions, fractures, and death," the agency said.

"In light of multiple reports of children becoming entrapped, pinned, and pulled under the rear roller of the product, CPSC urges consumers with children at home to stop using the product immediately," the agency said in a statement on its site. Pets are also in danger, added the commission, which is an independent federal regulatory agency charged with guarding the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death from products.

The CPSC said it was aware of 39 accidents, including one death. Peloton confirmed Saturday that there had been "39 incidents," with 23 involving children, one involving a pet, and 15 with unspecified objects. In March, Peloton CEO John Foley sent a note to customers informing them that a child had died in an accident involving the Peloton Tread Plus and urging them to review and follow safety warnings for the company's exercise equipment.

"We are currently assessing ways to reinforce our warnings about these critical safety precautions to hopefully prevent future accidents," said Foley in that note.

Peloton called the CPSC's warning "inaccurate and misleading."

"Like all motorized exercise equipment Tread+ is safe when used in accordance with our safety warnings," a company spokesperson said Saturday. The spokesperson also pointed to Peloton's full statement about Saturday's CPSC warning, which says the company is "troubled" by the commission's "unilateral" stance on the safety of its products.

Peleton says in the full statement that "there is no reason to stop using the Tread+, as long as all warnings and safety instructions are followed. Children under 16 should never use the Tread+, and Members should keep children, pets, and objects away from the Tread+ at all times."

In contrast, the CPSC urges consumers to "stop using the Peloton Tread+ if there are small children or pets at home."

"Incidents suggest that children may be seriously injured while the Tread+ is being used by an adult, not just when a child has unsupervised access to the machine," the agency warns, and it says consumers should also take the following steps:

  • "If consumers must continue to use the product, CPSC urges consumers to use the product only in a locked room, to prevent access to children and pets while the treadmill is in use. Keep all objects, including exercise balls and other equipment, away from the treadmill.
  • "When not in use, unplug the Tread+ and store the safety key away from the device and out of reach of children.
  • "Report any Peloton Tread+ incidents to CPSC at www.SaferProducts.gov or to CPSC's Hotline at 800-638-2772."
The agency notes that from August 2018 to September 2020 the Tread Plus was called, simply, the Tread. It gives the model number as TR-01.

The CPSC also posted a video that illustrates how a child can get pulled beneath the Peloton Tread Plus. It's unclear from the video whether the child escaped serious injury. The toddler does manage to get free of the machine and stumble away. Note: The video may be disturbing to watch.

Peloton recalling 125k treadmills for eating more small children than permissible by law.

Peloton recalls 125K treadmills, halts sales less than a month after child dies
https://www.click2houston.com/business/2021/05/05/peloton-recalls-treadmills-after-a-child-dies/

Peloton is recalling about 125,000 of its treadmills less than a month after denying they were dangerous and saying it would not pull them from the market, even though they were linked to the death of a child and injuries of 29 others.

The company said Wednesday that it will now offer full refunds for the Peloton Tread+ treadmills, which cost more than $4,200. It will also stop selling them.

The recall comes after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned on April 17 that people with children and pets should immediately stop using the Tread+ treadmill after a child was pulled under one of them and died.

At the time, Peloton pushed back against the safety commission saying the warning was “inaccurate and misleading" and that there was no reason to stop using the machines. CEO John Foley also said he had “no intention" of recalling the treadmills.

In a statement Wednesday, Foley apologized and said the company “made a mistake” in its initial response to the safety commission.

Shares of New York-based Peloton Interactive Inc. fell 14.6% to close at $82.62 Wednesday, its second-biggest one-day percentage decline since the stock started trading in 2019.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut who is chair of the consumer safety committee, said in a statement that the recall was dangerously delayed.

“Peloton unacceptably put consumers at risk," Blumenthal said, adding that he would work to strengthen the safety commission so that “companies like Peloton no longer get to call the shots on consumer safety."

Under current laws, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has to negotiate with companies in order to release warnings about a product's hazards.

Peloton is best known for its stationary bikes, but it introduced treadmills about three years ago. Sales of its equipment have soared during the pandemic as virus-wary people have avoided gyms and worked out at home. In the last three months of 2020, the company brought in $1 billion in revenue, more than double what it made the year before.

In all, Peloton said it received 72 reports of adults, kids, pets or other items, such as exercise balls, being pulled under the rear of the treadmill. Of those reports, 29 were of children who suffered injuries, including broken bones and cuts. One child, who was 6 years old, died.

Joseph Martyak, a spokesman at the Consumer Product Safety Commission, said the agency is still testing the treadmills, but it appears the design of the Peloton Tread+, including its belt and its height off the floor, could make it more likely to pull people, pets and items under the machine than other brands of treadmills.

Those who own the Tread+ treadmill have until Nov. 6, 2022, to get a full refund from Peloton. The safety commission still recommends that people stop using the treadmill, but for those that want to keep it, Peloton said it will move it free of charge to a room where children or pets cannot access it and update the software so a passcode is required to unlock it.

That Roblox is a tough one to trade long. Shorts have been killing it. I'm familiar with the game as my son has played it for years. Some sort of NFT marketplace could work in it but it would require great programming. I keep trying to limit my loss in case the bottom falls out so keeping a tight stop. Death by a thousand cuts. I'll get a good entry one of these tries.

There is this need of ratings As adults can perve on kids... However think about it why not take your virtual currency and treat it like Bitcoin? Have a finite (ha ha) amount and have some midget in Japan run the whole thing from a mystical mountaintop. Then these kids could get into the ferver-- the game could trigger when they want a run on Roblobucks up because WE'RE MINING MORE ROMBLOVBUCKS!! AND THEY CAN INCREASE THEIR HOLDINGS AND GET THE kick... I mean there is prospect here even if the games are so clunky and old fashioned.. i mean it's like Leggo's BUT that will get MICH BETTER THAT'S GOING TO BE THE CC NEW ARTISTS CREATING SERIOUS LOOKING GAMES..>> AND A RATING SYSTEM,.. BUT LETS SAY I DEFEAT THIS REALLY Hard to defeat dragon (assuming dragons) I could capture that digital moment and the sell it in a fake market place Roblo /Ebay and maybe pocket a few Off these Roblobucks also being accepted at Lids! Or Diks Sporting Goods! Combine the thrill of Baseball card hoarding with the high of holding of crypto currency all within a silly game.>~si

Its not. It may take a week, a month, or a year...
But there's a reason this thing has a $40B market-cap.

Best way to lose money in this game.... impatience.
