Carvana selected as a tactical call by Evercore ahead of earnings
- Evercore ISI adds Carvana(CVNA-0.5%)to the Evercore ISI Tactical Outperform list ahead of 1Q earnings in what it calls a tactical call.
- Evercore's breakdown: "CVNA stock is down 13% from its early March high vs. the S&P up 8% and the NDAQ up 13%. Since that time, we believe retail sell through accelerated into quarter end, and to start 2Q with April trends continuing the positive momentum based on our analysis. Historically the stock tends to trade on retail used unit growth, and we anticipate upside on revenue vs. printed Street estimates this quarter with constructive commentary around April trends. Our Base Case of $300 (4.2x CY22 P/S) is supported by our DCF and offers high single digit upside potential from current levels."
- The firm acknowledges that CVNA isn't cheap at 3.8X the above-consensus price-to-sales ratio, but thinks positive topline revisions and share gain support a partial re-rating with prior peak P/S of around 6.5X in mid-February, and a trailing six month average of around 5.5X P/S.
- Carvana isn't due to report earnings until May 6.
