Jackson Hole was originally named after Davey Jackson, a mountain man who trapped in Wyoming during the late 1800s. "Hole" was a term used in that day to describe a high mountain valley.
A gregarious and strong handed man who liked to hug, Davey Jackson came to some fame when he abducted several executives from Jay Cooke and Co. Angered by the Panic of 1873 and the closing of merchant bank Jay Cooke and Co, Davey Jackson who had put his life savings into railway bonds took his brutal revenge.
Stories of skinned beings and ritualistic pagan ceremonies abound in the back woods of Wyoming that Jackson prowled. Men disemboweled, hanging from trees and maybe the worst part.. Jackson always had a Hemorrhoid itch and it drove him crazy.. he liked a firm hand & finger back there and his prisoners in the wood became scratchers of the most humbling sort. thus the term Jackson's Hole took root.
