Fiscal Q1 Results Disappoint; Price Target Cut to US$4.50
RBC Capital Markets on Thursday reiterated its sector-perform rating on the shares of BlackBerry (BB.TO, BB) while reducing its price target to US$4.50 from US$5.00 after the one-time smartphone maker turned software company reported fiscal first-quarter results that came in shy of the investment bank's expectations.
"Excluding patent sale, Q1 below consensus. Excluding $230MM higher than expected patent licensing revenue (includes $218MM from the patent sale), Q1 revenue was $143MM (-15% Y/Y), below RBC/consensus at $161MM/$160MM. Similarly, excluding estimated $0.12 EPS from the higher than expected patent licensing revenue, non-GAAP EPS was - $0.06, below RBC/consensus at -$0.04/-$0.05 ... Maintain Sector Perform, reducing target from $5.00 to $4.50. The YTD rally in BlackBerry's shares reflects the potential for the strategic review to surface value. However, BlackBerry remains in the midst of its turnaround. We believe BlackBerry's discount to peers will persist pending improved fundamentals," analyst Paul Treiber wrote.
