Perion Network just launched a new generative AI product, and it could be a game-changer.
Ever since OpenAI unveiled what appears to be the next step in the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution with its large language model ChatGPT-4 chatbot nearly a year ago, just about every tech company out there has been laying a claim to an AI connection in the hopes of attracting some of the heightened interest around this technology.

By now, most investors have some level of awareness regarding the AI strategies of big tech companies like the "Magnificent Seven." As a result, those strategies are largely priced into those stocks already. For example, Nvidia's shares have soared this year as it's seen skyrocketing demand for its AI-related products. And Microsofthas gained in part from its partnership with OpenAI.

Rather than chase stocks that are already valued at more than $1 trillion, investors who are looking to get the biggest returns from AI might be better off focusing on smaller companies. One that looks particularly appealing is Perion Network(PERI2.90%), a fast-growing Israeli adtech company best known for its intelligent hub that connects ad buyers and sellers, optimizing pricing and placement for both parties. But Perion just announced a new AI that could help it penetrate a multibillion-dollar ad market.

What Perion is doing with AI

Perion launched an AI lab a few years ago tasked with developing new and unique products. Earlier the company unveiled SORT, a cookieless ad-targeting technology.

It just revealed the latest product to come out of its AI research unit: WAVE, which stands for Waveform Audio Voice Engine. It's an audio advertising technology powered by generative AI that creates and reads scripts in a human voice for ad spots served on podcasts, radio, and music streaming services. Because the creative component is limitless, WAVE can target ads and customize them in a way that would be impossible for traditional audio advertising with a human voice-over -- it would be too costly and inefficient.


The ads can be tailored based on factors including weather, location, time of day, and the device being used.

The first major customer for WAVE is Albertsons Companies(ACI0.73%), the nation's second-biggest supermarket operator. The grocer is using WAVE to serve tailored ads and seems pleased with it. Albertsons' director of paid media, Tony Colvin, told Perion: "When your team brought us the AI script and voice, we were blown away. It was very hard to detect that it was an actual AI voice -- right down to the nuances of how certain products are pronounced."

One of the criticisms of generative AI tools like ChatGPT so far has been that despite its evident capabilities, it lacks useful applications. Perion's WAVE clearly shows one way generative AI can add value for advertisers and consumers, and do something that previous technologies could not.

The product should help the company increase its penetration of the $6.8 billion U.S. digital audio market, which is expected to grow to $9.7 billion by 2027.


Perion also shared some other AI-based innovations in its third-quarter earnings report, including high-impact connected TV (CTV) ads that run alongside sports events. The technology can do things like identify a lull in the action, so that it can show an ad when a player is being substituted. Another example is an ad campaign with FanDuel that ran during Yankees baseball games immediately after a Yankees home run, allowing the brand to take advantage of an "unmissable moment" with the ad running as the player circles the bases.

Why Perion stock is a buy
Those innovations helped drive Perion's overall revenue up 17% year over year in the third quarter to $185.3 million; adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) were up 29% to $42.7 million. Connected TV was also a bright spot in the quarter, with revenue up 39% to $7.9 million.

The company showed particular strength in retail media in the quarter; revenue increased 112% to $13 million. In an interview I did with Perion CEO Tal Jacobson, he said that the company has focused on retail media because "You actually have the chance to work with big data." He explained that factors like purchase frequency, location, and promotions all help make a tool like WAVE more valuable for retailers than it would be for other kinds of advertisers. A retailer like Albertson's, for example, could customize ads in dozens of different ways that a carmaker is less likely to use.

Perion has a strong track record in recent years of delivering growth and outperforming the stock market. With the emergence of new AI technologies like WAVE, the company should continue to deliver impressive results.

The stock is also surprisingly cheap at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of just 12. As it continues to innovate in AI and tap into new markets like retail media, Perion Network looks like a great bet to continue to outperform.

Panama Canal Plans to Cut Transits by 40% Due to Ongoing Drought

The Panama Canal Authority released plans to drastically scale down transits at the canal phased in over the next three months as it reports water levels have continued to decline to unprecedented levels for this time of year. The current plan would see transits reduced by 43 percent by February 1, 2024, with large containerships, and LNG and LPG carriers, likely to be among the most impacted by the new round of cuts.

“The recorded precipitation for October has been the lowest on record since 1950,” writes the Panama Canal Authority in its new advisory. They are reporting that the rainy season was late in starting and with less than a month left is likely to fall far short of normal levels. October’s rainfall is 41 percent below normal levels resulting in 2023 ranking as the second driest year on record. Equally concerning for the canal’s operations are long-range weather forecasts showing that they can expect 38 percent less rain for the rest of the year.

After cutting the maximum draft of vessels from 50 feet to 44 feet, 39 feet at the Panamax Locks, the authority has been working to maintain the current levels. They decided to reduce the number of daily transits while also adopting water-saving and conservation measures. They highlight the addition of water-saving basins at the Neopanamax Locks and a technique of cross-filling at the Panamax Locks.

The canal, which has a capacity for 38 to 40 daily transits, has been operating at a total of 32 daily transits between the two locking systems since July 30 and was scheduled to go to 30 assigned slots on November 1. However, in an advisory released to customers dated October 30, the authority is outlining more drastic cuts.

The plan calls for a phased step down in capacity starting later this week at a total of 25 daily slots with the cuts coming entirely from what they call “supers,” the large vessels transiting the original locks of the canal. For the second half of November, they will cut one slot from the newer, larger Neopanamax Locks for a total of 24 daily slots, and then in December to 22 daily slots. The current plan calls for a total of 20 slots for January and 18 slots starting February 1.

The largest vessels that transit the Panama Canal, including containerships and LPG carriers will see transit cut by a third while the “supers,” which include LNG carriers, will see the number of daily trips reduced by more than 40 percent.

Analysts are highlighting that the cuts could impact the gas carrier segments especially hard. Rates for VLGC have already reached record highlights with reports saying it is mostly likely to impact propane and to a lesser extent butane shipments. The cuts will also come at a peak shipping season with much of the Northern Hemisphere in winter and normally driving strong demand for gas imports. It also comes as LNG use continues to rise in response to tightening environmental regulations on traditional fossil fuels and emissions.

During its last fiscal year, the Panama Canal recorded over 12,600 transits moving over 291 million tons of cargo. According to the canal’s daily traffic statistics posted online there are currently 94 vessels waiting for the transit, down slightly from the peak at over 100 vessels earlier in 2023 as they began to cut the number of available daily slots. After spiking, waiting times are currently down to an average of just under three days, but for large vessels including Neopanamax and Panamax Plus the waits are much longer. Neopanamax vessels without a reservation are waiting between four and five days on average while Panamax Plus vessels are between nine and 11 days. The cost of reservation slots soared to record highs in auctions after the cuts were announced at midyear.

The challenge for shippers and their carriers will increase due to the new limits with the expectation that more vessels may begin to divert to alternate routes even though they require greater distances. The larger containerships have already been forced to sail with smaller loads or offload containers for transshipment across Panama, an option not available to gas carriers and bulkers. Canal executives had previously predicted that the Panama Canal Authority would see a $200 million decline in revenues this physical year due to the restrictions.

(Bloomberg) -- Crescent Point Energy Corp. agreed to buy Hammerhead Energy Inc. for about C$2.05 billion ($1.5 billion) in the driller’s latest deal to expand its presence in the prolific shale oil and gas fields of western Canada.


The cash-and-stock acquisition will add about 800 drilling locations and an expected 56,000 barrels of daily oil equivalent production in 2024, Calgary-based Crescent Point said Monday. The purchase includes about C$455 million in assumed net debt for a total transaction value of about C$2.55 billion.


The purchase marks the latest push westward by Crescent Point, which has shifted its portfolio from Saskatchewan and North Dakota into the growing Montney and Kaybob Duvernay oil and gas plays in Alberta. Crescent Point in March agreed to buy Spartan Delta Corp.’s assets in the prolific Montney formation for about C$1.7 billion, adding holdings near the assets it had bought from from Shell Plc two years earlier.

The move comes amid a wave of consolidation among major energy companies, with Exxon Mobil Corp. agreeing to buy Pioneer Natural Resources Co. and Chevron Corp. striking a deal to purchase Hess Corp. last month.

The deal will make Crescent Point the seventh-largest Canadian explorer and producer by volume and the largest land owner in the Alberta Montney, the company said.

Crescent Point revised its 2024 preliminary guidance after the announcement. Estimated annual production is forecast at 200,000 to 208,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day, based on development capital expenditures of C$1.45 billion to C$1.55 billion.
