Gavin Newsom explained to journalists on Monday that Solar Cells don't generate power when there is cloud cover and it is nightime. Governor Newsom also explained that Wind Turbines don't generate power when the wind doesn't blow.
California is expected to be 4,400 Megawatts short on power today as the State and the West Coast suffers through a heat wave. The Governor requested that thermostats be set at 78 degrees, but it is widely expected that Members of the Screen Actors Guild are exempted.
State officials said that one of the reasons for the energy shortage was an over-reliance on 'renewables' (solar and wind). Governor Newsom said during the press conference that the State had to "sober up" about the fact that renewables had failed to provide enough power at peak demand, and that California needed "backup" and "insurance" from other energy sources.
One of the big problems is there are many cities that don't let people with solar have batteries in California. They force homeowners to "sell back" their electricity they generate at much lower rates so they can charge them again at night at higher rates. You lose about 5% of that power when transmitting across several miles. Wasting megawatts of power just to line their pockets a little more.
