When the majority of your party supports something its best not to take the opposite position.Newsome added to the list of democrats I will not vote for in 2024.

Student debt forgiveness is not at all popular. This is a good move.

I believe you have misread the number of Democrat voters that are wanting more progressive policies and that number is not a majority of The Democrat Party===
The majority of democrat voters want some student loan forgiveness,medicare option for all,police reform, expand The SC, to address climate change etc.
