Gallup Survey: No Ban On Assault Weapons

Summary

Americans favor new legislation to limit gun sales, presumably to help prevent the kind of gun violence that became all too familiar in 2012. This is seen in increased support for making the laws covering the sale of firearms more strict, and for passing new gun laws. However, views toward banning semi-automatic guns or assault rifles are unchanged, and -- possibly reflecting Americans' desire to defend themselves given the rash of high-profile gun violence -- a record-high 74% oppose preventing anyone but the police or other authorized officials from owning a handgun.

I assume this was a national survey.

What do you think those numbers are in districts with republican congressmen or Senators? I'm guessing a lot more against any new bans.

I suspect Harry Reid will let Feinstein and the other gun confiscation zealots have their 15 minutes, but he isn't going to allow an actual vote on an assault weapons ban. He has a very high lifetime NRA rating and comes from a state where assault rifles are very popular. The leading manufacturer of AK's, Arsenal, is based in Nevada. Like the slimy little weasle he is, he'll probably blame it on republicans, but there are many democrats who don't want to have to vote against gun rights.

I think you are right. I read that Feinstein also wants to ban handguns in her bill. That will never fly. There was some support for more inclusive background checks and limiting magazine size in the Gallup article. I can see the liberals trying to push those items in the end.
