Google - New Class of Shares and Symbol Change effective April 2, 2014

"Google Inc. has approved the issuance of Class C stock as a dividend (spin off) to stockholders with a dividend record date of March 27, 2014, and a dividend payment date of April 2, 2014.

The new Class C shares will trade under the existing stock ticker GOOG, while the class A (existing) shares will trade under the new stock ticker GOOGL. The anticipated first day of trading is April 3. Full details regarding the symbol change from GOOG-US to GOOGL-US are available on our Quotes+ News section or from Google's Investor Relations."

The main difference between Alphabet's (the company formerly known as Google) GOOG and GOOGL stock ticker symbols is that GOOG shares have no voting rights, while GOOGL shares do.
