Don't quit your day job until you have a profitable system over time - at least 12 months. Anyone can be profitable over a 3-4 month period, but the market changes.
If you have been laid off - get another job until you are profitable over a one year time frame. It may take a lot longer to turn profitable than one thinks. Best to learn on someone else's dime.

I definitely agree with this! Get a job working 2nd shift and spend at least a month on a simulator -- more months is better.
