French police report shootout and explosion in Paris

Police officials in France say there has been an explosion in a bar near a Paris stadium and a shootout in a Paris restaurant.

Several European outlets are reporting that 18 people are dead. Two police officials confirmed the shooting but had no information about casualties.

One of the police officials said there was a separate explosion near the Stade de France north of Paris during a soccer match between France and Germany. It was unclear if the events were linked. NBC News confirmed that the shootings are not near the near the soccer stadium and the match is continuing on without interruption...

This is probably ISIS or some branch, but what gain do they have attacking civilians in Paris? They want to incite a ground war in Syria with the west?
