Is the data you use for backtests from IB or from Multicharts? If its from IB data then it wont go back as far am I right? For example SPY data wont go back to inception?

By 'side by side', if you mean run the applications separately, then yes. They are not running as one application. I don't know if there's a way to run MC within TWS. But you can detach a MC chart and plot it on top of TWS next to the DOM. MC also has its own DOM.
We are working with IB on this. There's no ETA, but we are thinking about how to improve this behavior.
