Guillory was originally a Republican, holding a seat in the Louisiana State House from 2004 through 2007, when he switched parties to become a Democrat, but only because he was in a Democratic district, and he hoped no one would notice his actual voting record was still quite conservative.
Guillory then made the jump to the Louisiana State Senate in 2009, and in 2013, switched parties again to again become a Democrat.
In the 2015 elections, Guillory gave up his seat in the Louisiana State Senate to make a run for Governor of Louisiana, finishing a distant fourth, with only about 8% of the vote.

A Democratic state senator in Pennsylvania who represents a district that flipped to President Trump in 2016 said he plans to become an Independent and caucus with the state’s Republicans because he’s tired of “purist” politicians and felt a disconnect with an increasingly liberal party.
“As an Independent, I will continue to put people above politics," state Sen. John Yudichak, who represents Pennsylvania’s 14th senatorial district in the northeastern part of the state, said. "I will continue to support Democratic ideas as well as Republican ideas when it is clear that they serve the greater good and help government work for people rather than the narrow interests of partisan purists.”

Senate Minority Leader Jay Costa said Democrats were “extremely disappointed” by Yudichak’s decision to turn away from their “big tent” values.
Yudichak responded that the Democrats’ “tent is shrinking every day.”
The Republicans will likely have a 29-21 majority next year with the Yudichak and a January special election in a solidly Republican district.
“This is unique,” Yudichak said. “I’m an independent. I’m going to be fiercely independent. I’ve been independent by nature, now it’s going to be by party.”
Yudichak won re-election to a third term in 2018 in the district without any challengers.
He said his stances on issues won’t change and he'll continue to support some of Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf’s policies.
Democrats picked up six seats in the state in 2018, causing the party to look at potentially getting the majority for the first time in almost 30 years.

What a bunch of twists. Everything he said about 19th and early 20th centuries was true, but he forgot to mention parties competently changed their positions. Dems became what used to be GOP and VS. It was democrat Johnson who signed the Civil Rights Act and thus making south republican.
Label is just a label, it is a fight between progress and regress. Conservatives hate progress for the most part and hate educated masses. We could have cured many deceases by now, but GOP fighting tooth and nail on stem cells, and this is just one of countless examples.

Conservatives - true conservatives - want to be left alone, want government out of their lives, and want the country they know and love to remain the country they know and love - as far as their lives are concerned. What is so bad about that?
Liberals want to tax us, tell us what we can or cannot say, force us to follow their rules because our rules offend someone (in their camp), and want to reallocate our money to causes they feel are worthwhile. Add to that they want us to embrace a culture that isn't ours for the benefit of the "few". When we don't do that, we are immediately labeled racist, or sexist, or a bigot, etc.
