Envisage the following scenario - someone looks at US foreign policy in the last decade and concludes that tens of thousands of innocent people have been murdered by the US armed forces. Said person is neither muslim, religious, political or even ideological in any way - they just find mass slaughter of innocent people to be morally abhorrent. They therefore view lethal reprisals as justified.
Is that really such an unfathomable scenario? If you were given a button that would immediately kill Bush, Rumsfeld and Cheney, with no consequences to yourself, would you push it? Why does someone have to be a muslim to consider wiping out mass murderers?
The only "leap of faith" needed here is to go from abhorrence at the actions of the US armed forces, to actually killing individual soldiers. But since those soldiers voluntarily signed up to actually killing individual citizens of other countries, it is easy to see how many people would not find that distinction particularly troubling.
