For Windows XP Users - April 8th, 2014 - End of Support

Does anyone understand the specific implications of this Microsoft position?

If further fixes/updates to XP are terminated after the suspense date, I am not concerned.

If I have to rebuild one of my XP systems from the install disk, and can no longer get XP updated from the old CD level to say the Dec 2013 configuration I will be impacted.

Anyone know the details?

You will almost certainly be able to download all the updates even after the end date. There just won't be new ones.

Simple solution is to back up your system this month and you can always rebuild it with the very latest updates. By the way there is always someone who does that, so currently updated XPs are available on torrent sites and probably on the MS site too...
 
Microsoft is releasing some upgrades for Internet Explorer 6, 7 and 8. And if you are still on the 'middle', i.e. the 7 release, the Windows Update could take forever.

In this case the solution is to upgrade to IE 8 (it does not care whether you are using it as a browser; the issue is the bottleneck it creates for the OS updates) and download the latest cumulative security update: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41404

Otherwise that svhost.exe could use a lot of CPU time and finally block a low-end PC.
 
wasted a lot of time figuring out wtf was wrong with an old laptop.

count millions of hours wasted by users on that bug.

and I already had 8, it needed some other patch and still took hours to update

IN THE CASE OF MSFT, THEY MADE IE 9 NON COMPATIBLE WITH XP, SO I AM STUCK WITH WHAT I HAVE OR FIREFOX AND ANOTHER BROWSER THAT WORKS ON ANTIQUATED MACHINES (A HUMANITY BENEFACTOR IN FRANCE CREATED THAT ONE)

WHERE DOES THAT LEAD ? YOU THROW AWAY YOUR OTHERWISE PERFECTLY GOOD PC , AND IT GOES TO A LANDFILL IN POOR COUNTRIES, WHICH ARE OUR ELECTRONIC JUNKYARDS.

I was an IT fellow (for some of my career). There is some truth as well as some "BULLSH*T" in what you say.

I think that the hardware industry has become a commodity and because of Moore's law has trouble keeping high margins. All industries decay due to this at different rates except the required consumables (food, water, chatrooms eg).

The software industry costs a lot to create products, minimal to replicate them, but has the issue that when you have sold one to everyone in the world what do you do for an encore? It is a one-trick pony unless you can get into licences, upgrades, or use the great clothing and cosmetic industry - limited brand competition and fashion (I have 30 pairs of shoes and needs some more because JJ has them).

Currently they are headed to SAAS and HAAS with the cloud, and data rooms. The NSA has an image problem, they should advertise free data backup and free analytics instead and join the future revolution.

The book good to great talks about some of the problems with industry in a true capitalist society.

I am not a big friend of Microsoft but I do understand why they do some of the things they do. Remember in technology, the best technology is not always the winner. If you can't compete with the best technology, why not buy up all your competitors, squeeze their margins, change the goalposts (free hardware with our software) etc. It is a vicious industry in general IMO since their is no long term sustainability with fickle consumer trends.

dude, who cares if ie 9 or + is not compat with xp?

only a moron uses ie for browsing anyway.

you should not be using xp at all, for your main box. you a pauper?
