You are right, the first time I ever knew that a person could have a few hours without lots of stray worries and just overwhelming anxiety and dissatisfaction was when I took a valium. Valium was more addicting to me than anything but cigarettes but I have to admit that Demarol was addicting, it brought on a tranquility a little like the Valium but it took amounts of the stuff that pretty much disabled me from functioning at all. Blow I hated, Valium fixed me up and made me understand a lot of people better. I probably should quit coffee too.

Perhaps your new understanding has placed you years ahead of modern medical orthodoxy, since the phrase "GABA deficiency syndrome" returns a grand total of four google hits.
Meanwhile, across the nation we have masses of benzodiazepine addicts who are subjected to all sorts of 12-step programs and other ineffective forms of self-flagellation... when all they may truly require is a simple nutritional supplement to make them well. If GABA works for you, please just pay it forward by telling some of the people who need to know about it.
If not, there are all sorts of other alternative ideas out there to try.

Don't expect legalization anytime soon--prices, and thus profit, on their black-market product would drop drastically, meaning we'd have to settle for smaller wars with fewer corpses. And, really, nobody wants that.

I honestly think that is the real reason drug addiction is not treated as what it is, an illness. If someone has a drug habit, in my perfect world, they would go to a doctor on a regular basis for a script. He would do a complete phsysical, warn them of the dangers of what they are doing and make them watch a video on the harmful effects of their favorite drug. After that though they would be able to take their legit. script to a pharmacy and fill it, all narcotics would be manufactured by the government and every bit of profit would go to treatment and prevention of addiction. This will never happen though because the "war on drugs" employs way too many people and funds way too many dirty wars. Just imagine all the cops, probation officers, wardens, prison gaurds, DEA agents and construction workers who'd be out of work if we decriminalized the position of drugs.
