Just yesterday, IFLScience reported on an FDA announcement urging people to stop taking livestock drugs to treat COVID-19. Ivermectin, touted as a wonder drug by many despite having zero verifiable data to support such claims, has reached headlines across the internet as people take increasingly large quantities to the point of serious danger.

To substantiate their claims, many cited a large meta-analysis into the effects of Ivermectin on SARS-CoV-2, which was published on July 6. Now, this study has been redacted at the request of the authors after one of the studies included in the analysis was shown to contain fraudulent data, entirely changing the results of the meta-analysis. The authors now state that although they will release a revised version, the data adjusted with the removal of the fraudulent preprint suggests Ivermectin has no survival benefit for COVID-19 infection in humans.

The preprint in question was a widely-cited, supposedly randomized control trial on Ivermectin use in hospitalized patients. After being assigned it while studying for his masters, medical student Jack Lawrence discovered that a substantial quantity of the introduction section was directly plagiarized from Ivermectin press releases and similar articles, which the author then ran through a thesaurus to change. As the Guardian points out in an interview with Lawrence, this led to some somewhat hilarious mishaps.

“Humorously, this led to them changing ‘severe acute respiratory syndrome’ to ‘extreme intense respiratory syndrome’ on one occasion,” Lawrence said.

Concerns were then raised about the data, which had a large number of direct errors. Raw data did not match those formatted for figures, with the number of deaths in the Ivermectin treatment group either intentionally or mistakenly downplayed by a huge 50 percent. Out of the entire cohort, 79 patients had medical records that were obvious clones of others, with a few fields changed to not make it appear obvious. It is hard to believe this was done unintentionally.

After Lawrence contacted a squad of data scientists and disease specialists, the overwhelming evidence against the paper led to it being withdrawn for "ethical concerns".

With one paper redacted and another currently revising their findings into showing no significant effect of Ivermectin, we can naively hope that this will be the end of the Ivermectin saga, at least until valid data suggests otherwise. This is one of the largest and most-cited pro-Ivermectin studies out there and was largely used in the misinformation campaigns despite other studies finding contradicting results. Even Merck, the manufacturers of Ivermectin and those with most to gain from its sale, have stated there is absolutely no scientific basis for its use against COVID-19.

Another Ivermectin fraudulent study. These people should be banned from the industry and forced to pay financial penalties because people have died because of what they originally stated before the fraud was uncover.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone close to the research had threatened to go to the media with the truth. That forced the authors to do a revision of their results.

Now imagine if the Anti-Vaxxers saw something similar about the vaccine trials having fraudulent data or that all the U.S. hospitals had conspired together to show that most of the Covid Hospitalizations, ICU admissions and Deaths were those that were not vaccinated was also fraudulent (a mass conspiracy)...

The Anti-Vaxxers would storm the FDA and CDC to look for people to hang or kidnap as in another insurrection...then later claim they were on a tourist visit. :D

The head of the Tokyo Metropolitan Medical Association has urged doctors and Covid-19 patients to begin a regimen of ivermectin, which he says is effective at treating and preventing the virus.

During an August 12 press conference, Dr. Haruo Ozaki called for the drug, which is proving effective in numerous studies, to be used due to the drastic rise in Covid cases.

“In Africa, if we compare countries distributing ivermectin once a year with countries which do not give ivermectin…I mean, they don’t give ivermectin to prevent Covid, but to prevent parasitic diseases…but anyway, if we look at Covid numbers in countries that give ivermectin, the number of cases is 134.4 per 100,000, and the number of death is 2.2 in 100,000.”

“Now, African countries which do not distribute ivermectin: 950.6 cases per 100,000 and 29.3 deaths per 100,000,” Ozaki highlighted.

“I believe the difference is clear.”

“Of course, one cannot conclude that ivermectin is effective only on the basis of these figures, but when we have all these elements, we cannot say that ivermectin is absolutely not effective, at least not me.”

“We can do other studies to confirm its efficacy, but we are in a crisis situation.”

“With regard to the use of ivermectin, it is obviously necessary to obtain the the informed consent of the patients, and I think we’re in a situation where we can afford to give them this treatment.“

Speaking to The Yomiuri Shimbun last week, Ozaki argued the medicine should be implemented due to its known efficacy and relatively few side effects.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sent a health advisory Thursday warning doctors and the public about the "rapid increase" in prescriptions for the anti-parasitic drug ivermectin.

The CDC also cautions about an increase in reports of severe illness caused by the drug to poison centers.

Ivermectin is used to treat parasites such as worms and lice in humans and it is also used by veterinarians to de-worm large animals.

For months, conservative media -- including Fox News hosts Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham -- have talked about how it could be used to treat Covid-19. It's a popular topic on Twitter. Ivermectin has been called a "miracle drug" in congressional hearings. Even Wisconsin Republican Sen. Ron Johnson has been touting its benefit to treat Covid-19 cure.

Normally, about 3,600 prescriptions are written for ivermectin in a week, the CDC said. This rose more than tenfold by the week of January 8, when 39,000 prescriptions were written. "Since early July 2021, outpatient ivermectin dispensing has again begun to rapidly increase, reaching more than 88,000 prescriptions in the week ending August 13, 2021. This represents a 24-fold increase from the pre-pandemic baseline," the CDC said.

GoodRx a company that tracks drug prices has seen a similar sharp increase in prescriptions filled for ivemectin. From the company's data for August, so far they've seen 20 times the average level of fills in 2019.

The US Food and Drug Administration has cautioned people against using ivermectin to treat Covid-19. Last Saturday the FDA tweeted: "You are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, y'all. Stop it."

Calls to poison control centers have increased three-fold, compared to the number of calls about the drug before the pandemic, the CDC said.

Some examples of these calls included an adult who wanted to prevent Covid-19 and had to be hospitalized for nine days after drinking a cattle formula. Another person who bought pills online to treat their Covid-19 infection was hospitalized after taking five tablets a day for five days.

The CDC reminded doctors that ivermectin is not authorized or approved for use in Covid-19 patients. Doctors did investigate the possibility, but clinical trials of the drug "yielded insufficient evidence" to treat Covid-19. Scientists would need to perform more clinical trials to see if it actually worked to treat the disease. Overdoses of the drug can cause stomach problems, nerve damage, seizures, disorientation, coma and death.

The CDC advisory reminded the public that vaccination rather than treatment "is the safest and most effective way to prevent getting sick and protect against severe disease and death" from Covid-19.
