Food stamp fraud rampant: GAO report

really? That's the best you can come up with? We can solve this country's problems by eliminating fraud poor people are committing with their food stamp card?
Did he say that? I thought he, like me, is just tired of paying for welfare fraud. What with us being tax payers and all.

Depends on what you're eating and where you live. A 6oz filet every day would be $210 a month at $19/lb, so, no, it wouldn't be difficult for a single man to eat $180 in groceries in a month.

Yes, they could be more efficient, but the food stamp allowance is not a blanket amount. What you get depends at least in part on assets. Perhaps a more productive study would be means-testing for Social Security. It was begun, after all, as a literal social safety net. How many old Congressmen who are forever complaining about government waste are collecting and cashing Social Security checks (Ron Paul, for one)?
if you can eat a filet mignon every day you deserve to die. Have you ever actually computed how much you spend on the groceries you actually eat each month?

the food stamp program is heavily means tested

that's why a man who is on food stamps who gets a min wage job loses almost all of his food stamps

so instead of making $7.25 at his new job, it is more like making $6.25

and on the other side, we still subsidize the workers at Walmart. Walmart pays them a little, and we the taxpayers pay them a little more in food stamps.

remember that the next time you are looking for a good steak at Walmart, because their beef isn't worth shit. It's mostly salt and water.

Actually I know exactly what I spend on everything every month. That's one reason I was able to retire so much earlier than most.

And I don't look for steak at WalMart. In fact, I don't go to WalMart at all.

just curious, what do spend on food groceries? Only those approved by food stamps. Not paper towels or dishwashing liquid. Only food you could buy with food stamps.???

I'm not on food stamps, but I have friends who are. If you really want to know how much I spend on food every month, I could break down my monthly receipts, but why would I want to do that? I don't even know who you are.

I'm sure it pisses you off, but if you really want to make a difference, try medicare and the military.

otherwise, you are just a grumpy old man nitpicking about little shit

Takes a pretty cold heart to deny poor people food

I was on food stamps once. They gave me way too much money. I use to buy the whole Thanksgiving Dinner every year for my extended family.

get a life, bitch about something that matters

Actually I have a very good grasp of the issues facing households who endure 'food security' issues. The worse victims are children in these households -- in many of them the children only get fed from the free lunch programs at schools - and never get much at home. Why is this do you ask? It is because their guardian has traded the family EBT benefits for drugs or cash instead of feeding the children.

The measures that I outlined above would make it more difficult for the guardian to misappropriate the EBT program benefits and not feed the children.

Do you have something against measures that will help children get fed?

ok, but they gave me $180/mo, and there is no way I can eat that much, and I doubt you can either.

otherwise, I am all for food stamps. I think everybody should be on them. It is the least of our problems as a country. I don't know how much of my tax bill on April 15 goes to food stamps, but it's probably not one iota enough to make a difference in my lifestyle. That's why I say it is chicken shit to bitch about people getting money for food. And it costs me the same whether they use it for food, or they have figured out some way to use it for drugs. So, as far as my tax bill, it is a moot point.

the whole reason I was on food stamps was because of substance abuse. I think you underestimate the ingenuity of an addict. I can just buy food legally and sell it at a discount to you and pocket the profit and use it to buy whatever I want. So good luck, just write another goddamned law. Lord knows we have enough of them, why not add a few more?

I do not underestimate the ingenuity of an addict. However putting measures in place that ensure that only the person listed on the benefit card are obtaining the benefit is a step in the right direction to promoting the integrity of the system. If an addict needs to first buy the food before selling some of the food for drugs -- then they may at least save some of the food for the children in the household... which is the entire intent of these rules.

Keep in mind that the original intent of the food stamp program was to feed families with children... not to feed individuals with no under-18 children.
