Food inflation

Quote from Random.Capital:

Not if you have taste buds, it doesn't. The generic cereals are definitely worse taste and texture than the name brands, with very few exceptions.

As for that Coca Cola - back in the day it was made with real sugar, whereas the current stuff is all HFCS - and it most definitely does not taste the same.

It does to me (cereals) and I've tried every one of them. I should clarify though, it's not the generic store brand, rather a large grocery chain that sells their own in-house label, so it's not necessarily generic, but even cheaper cost-wise that supermarket generic items.

a 2 L coke cost 1.25 last year now $2 that is real inflation.

The other day 2L coke was $1.89, now is a $1.89 a lot of money for a 2L bottle of coke???

IT may not be, but when you look of how much a bottle of soda has risen in the last few years its quite amazing.

Tide Detergent $15.99

Bounty Paper Towels the largest they make $16.00++++

1 LB of butter over $5.00

and these prices are only going higher, as long as they keep propping the markets up, as long as they keep QE in place and keep easy money policies in place price of goods will continue to rise!!!!

Yes, as they say "common sense is not so common", you clearly have it, and most people do not as I routinely see people go to the local grocery store, buy full price items and even when they buy the discount items, they feel too embarassed to use the discount card, lol.

Another thing worth mentioning is that most of the name brand chips, cereals, etc are literally 3-4x the price of a "generic" brand. I see people bitching about cereal prices all the time, well guess what you can get that same cereal for $1.75 (and I swear it tastes the same).

As Random Capital points out as well, inflation in one necessity will ensure deflation in another, it's a game of musical chairs. Just wait until the public sector gets the pink slip, then we'll really see this downward trend pick up steam...no matter where the S&P is priced nominally.

I did do a taste test not too long ago, I bought the store brand oats which are like Cheerios, they looked different and had a different taste, could I eat them? sure..... but for some reason when it comes to certain generic products cereal is just not one of things I choose. I would rather go General mills or kellogs, I usually wait for the sale and stock up on a few boxes of each.

Quote from the1:

Where are you living? Inflation is beginning to take off. Go buy a loaf of bread. It's now higher than it was in 2007 before the bomb went off. If the Fed keeps rates at 0 and QEIII comes on board it's going to get much, much worse. Expect more food riots in less developed countries. Shit, maybe even in this country. Wait til bread hits 6 bucks a loaf and a gallon of gas hits 6 bucks. We're already at 4 for each here.

IF QE3 does make it to the markets and rates stat at 0% for another 12-18 months it is going to get a lot more serious, this is just the beginning Bubble ben bernake has backed himself into a corner, what ever he does will cause stress on the system no matter which way he goes. All he had to do was let the markets handle it but instead they had to intervene as they always do which always leads to future economic problems.
