Food costs going up.

Not only are food prices going higher but now they are fucking the consumer by reducing the quantity in many products. Funny how many do not take notice of this.

Mark-to-market valuation of derivatives and real estate will offset that with deflation. :( :D

Will offset that with deflation ?

And when might that miraculous event come to pass? :)

I was just in a discount grocery store today. I noticed two things. One was that some of the veggies were a little smaller than they normally are. The other was the price per ear of corn. A single ear was 49 cents. This time last year, the same store was selling it for 25 cents each.

Anyway...it was interesting what you said. But if its true, that they are forcing manufacturers to cut margins, that means more unemployement, which means more government handouts.

Also coincidently I went to wal-mart a few days ago. For the first time i saw a few empty shelves. So even if retailers cut and cut and they cant keep their stores shelves stocked, that will cause regular people to go and and sell these things at a higher price. If walmart sells a widget for 10 bucks and I really want a widget and they have none on their store shelves, Im going to ebay to find one. There I get one for $15. Then when the widgets finally get stocked again in walmart, Im going to buy them all and resell on ebay too. When retailers try to force manufacturers to cut costs so they can lower prices, its quite possible that people will buy that stuff just to resell it. People will created a higher demand for the widgets just to resell.

Not saying that it would happen for sure, but its very possible.

Smaller sizes are definitely in the mix, as corporations cut sizes. We're looking at trimming ounces to keep margins where they need to be. But companies are done laying off people. They're not going to HIRE any more, which I think is the real problem, because they're learning how to live and produce with current employees. So while unemployment won't go up, it's not going to get better either.

But a new study says Walmart's actually been raising its prices on groceries in 2010.

According to a report by JPMorgan Securities, since February they have seen a 2.3% average price increase for the items in their 31-item basket of grocery goods at Walmart. This follows a 1.9% increase between January and February.

Many of those weighted items are produce, which are based on commodity pricing. I'm surprised they (Walmart) didn't say that. It's difficult to cut prices on tomatoes or corn. Market sets price.

But you sure can cut pudding, ice cream and potato chips.

Speaking of trimming ounces. One packaged lunchmeat, not sure of the name, went from 9 1/4 ounce to 9 oz. Price stayed the same. Sly devils.

Don't blame them or anybody for that matter, sop.

Tough nut to crack is to lower prices and increase sales. I always felt WMT followed the jumbo size theory to increase sales dollars.

While irrelevant, your personal anecdotes are always amusing!
