Yes, even thought the Alligator Farms have disappeared, there are a lot of opportunities in Sunny Florida.
NYC also has bums and crooks on every corner as well, not to mention the absurdly over-priced real estate, where unless you are a millionaire, you are relegated to living in a tiny studio with cockroaches for $2k/month.

GA, TX, TN, and NC are the best places to live in nowadays. Very low cost of living.
The correct choice is moving to Florida and it is not even close. Having lived there most of my adult life, Manhattan (not nyc) is awesome to live in when you are either making more than enough money or living with a girl enjoying your youth. Having to walk the extra 2 blocks to save a buck on a soda is just ridiculous, as is taking the bus etc...You can always move back when you get significant cash.
The quality of life is much better in Fl. The cost of everything, the environment, weather etc.
The only downside I see is not knowing anybody, but unless youre socially retarded it shouldnt be hard. I mean youre 19, its not like youre 40 where it might be creepy to start making new friends. Just do a lot of social activities yourself hockey, take a class at one of the local colleges. Can always meet girls online.

NYC has the lowest crime rate of any big city in the USA. Easily. You barely see homeless people much anymore. I'm sorry, but your stereotypes are way out of date. Texas cities are routinely high on the lists of places with high crime rates. Atlanta GA as well. Plus, the cities are dumpy and boring.
