Florida high school under lockdown after reports of shooter, victims, police say

I actually like the idea of arming *qualified* teachers, but certain criteria needs addressing.

Weapon security and training. CCP is no way near enough, basically they need the same weapons training and background screening requirements as local law enforcement.

So they'd need to be selected and sponsored by their school boards for training and compensated.

Then addressing how to secure said weapons inside a school. Select Teacher's shouldn't be open carry, or even known to students.

But can't we wish and try for "no" next shooters?

Saw this news report on tv about schools that already arm some teachers. I guess they have safes in each room with the loaded gun but the safe opens just by reading their thumbprint or something so it can be done fast. Not saying I know whether that is workable or not, but I don't think a school that was trying to figure out how to do it would have to start from scratch. There learnings to be had. You may recall that I suggested that we could talk to other schools, including in countries such as Israel and the like just take some learnings not necessarily to duplicate their situation. Whereupon, Usual Tard chimed in and his binary brain took him off a cliff.

This goes beyond the scope of self-protection, you're basically putting a tremendous responsibility and liability for a teacher in this role. So it has to be done correctly.

20 terrified teachers opening up with a hallway full of students!!!!! Not something I want to see.

So CC'ing a bunch of unprepared and ill-trained Teachers is not the way to go with this.

PARKLAND, Fla. (Reuters) - Florida Governor Rick Scott announced a proposal on Friday to increase restrictions on buying guns and to strengthen school safety measures after a gunman killed 17 people at a high school in the state last week.

Scott said he would work with state lawmakers during the next two weeks to raise the minimum age for buying any kind of gun in Florida to 21 years old, with some exceptions for younger military members and law enforcement officers. Long guns, including the semiautomatic AR-15-style assault rifle used in the Feb. 14 attack, can be bought by people as young as 18 under current law.

The Republican governor also said he would change laws to make it “virtually impossible for anyone who has mental issues to use a gun.” He wants to ban the sale and purchase of bump stocks, an accessory that transforms a semi-automatic rifle into a weapon able to fire hundreds of rounds a minute.
