OK, no one is defending the content of what these students said, but where does the university get the power to punish them for something they said apparently off campus? As a state institution, the First Amendment fully applies to the university. They have some limited right to limit speech or conduct to maintain order, etc. This seems way beyond that. They are claiming that the students created a hostile environment, whatever that means.
There is also the problem of unequal treatment. It will not take long to uncover instances where favored minorities were not disciplined for things that made others "uncomfortable."
When far out leftwing wackiness or outright violence is at issue, universities wrap themselves in the cloak of academic freedom, free speech, etc. Obviously, that only applies to PC-approved speech or violence directed against conservatives.
Then there is the obvious unfairness of collective punishment for the actions of a couple of morons. This whole episode reminds me of the Duke lacross scandal. University administrators and the PC nazis can't respond quickly or viciously enough if some rich white boys are accused of a PC violation. Due process and constitutional rights be damned.
