A T1 internet connection is not going to have lower latency than a FIOS internet connection - they both are direct connections between you and the VZ CO. With FIOS the connection is optical, with T1 its copper.Quote from mastertrader456:
Bandwidth is only half the equation. More importantly is latentcy(ping). T1 has a much lower latency than cable/fios. Bandwidth is just how much data can be sent. Latency is the speed of data sent.
When you are trading you are sending/receiving small packets of data, so bandwidth is not important. The latency of those packets is crucial.
Most of the latency is going to be from the VZ CO to your broker which is dictated by the physical distance the packets have to travel (speed of light in fiber)
If you want really low latency you have to co-locate.
This is good as it keeps information in one place than across many similar threads.
