Fios or T1?

A T1 internet connection is not going to have lower latency than a FIOS internet connection - they both are direct connections between you and the VZ CO. With FIOS the connection is optical, with T1 its copper.

Most of the latency is going to be from the VZ CO to your broker which is dictated by the physical distance the packets have to travel (speed of light in fiber)

If you want really low latency you have to co-locate.
 
Didn't read any of the posts in the thread - if you want bang for the buck go for FiOS. I setup many clients with Verizon's 150/50 business account and its awesome - for $399/month you get that plus phone & TV.

T1 on the other hand gives you heartbeat, five 9's and a SLA.


Also FWIW, Bloomberg still requires only a single T1 for 5-9 terminals at the same location so in terms of bandwidth requirements a T1 can handle up to 9 Bloomberg terminals.

Latency on the T1 will usually be better as well.
 
Optical signals travel about 2/3 the speed of light through fiber and then have to be converted into electrical signals. Electric signals travel faster through copper and dont require the end conversion. Copper is faster but Fiber can handle substantially more bandwidth.

Signals in copper do not travel at the speed of light, as far as I know its a wash with optical. Optical switching gear tends to be very fast because its designed to handle high bandwidth traffic, T1 gear is old and likely to be much slower because its based on older outdated technology.

Also if you want to be anal about it then you need to consider the packet insertion delay affect on latency, since the fiber is going to be clocked at least 10x the speed of a copper T1 the packets will be inserted much faster reducing the delay on the fiber path.

In any case the time it takes for the packets to go from you to your local CO is going to be insignificant versus the time it takes for them to go from the CO to the broker so its not worth arguing about.
