Finally! Hate Crime Charges for "Knockout Game"

HOUSTON (AP) — A white Houston-area man was arrested Thursday on federal hate crimes charges for allegedly shooting video of himself sucker-punching a 79-year-old black man in a "knockout game"-style attack.

Conrad Alvin Barrett, 27, made a brief appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Frances Stacy, who scheduled a detention hearing for the Katy man on Friday.

According to prosecutors, the attack happened Nov. 24 in Katy, but it wasn't until 12 days later that authorities connected the attack to the cellphone video of it.

Authorities learned of the case because Barrett allegedly showed the video on the night of the attack to an off-duty arson investigator he had just met at a restaurant in nearby Folshear. According to the criminal complaint, Barrett asked the off-duty investigator and the woman with the investigator if they knew about the knockout game. He told them he played earlier that day, then showed them the video, prosecutors allege.

The investigator then flagged down a uniformed officer across the street and led him to Barrett.

The attack video doesn't show Barrett's face, but investigators matched his voice to the voice in the video and the couple at the restaurant told investigators that Barrett was wearing the same shorts and shoes at the person who shot the video.

Never been a fan of "hate" laws. But some POS sucker punches an old man for no reason, records a video of it and is so *$#&ing proud that he shows it off to strangers?! MF needs to go to jail `til he's an old man! We need to bring back work gangs for all these mofos regardless of the races involved. And make conditions tough enough that some of these losers die before release.

I don't care if the attacker is black or white. If the criminal attacks someone due to their race then the 'hate crime' law needs to applied.
However it needs to be used in ALL situations and not only applied by prosecuters when the attacker is white and victim is black.

Laws should be applied equally and fairly irrespective of race, wealth or family background.... or not used at all.

Laws never have been and never will be applied equally, it's a good thing to try for but impossible to achive. It looks like blacks get a better deal with the hate crimes but they get hit harder with most other criminal charges than whites do. Rich people get better deals than poor people, good looking get better deals than fat and ugly, and on and on.

Meh. Hate crimes as separate offenses make no sense.

Was someone assaulted and beaten? Yes. That's a crime. Send the guy to prison for it. Why must we complicate things so much?

Conrad is innocent until proven guilty. We also need to establish whether or not the black man provoked Conrad or was violent to Conrad. It could well end up as a case of self defense.

In our country, its becoming a crime to be white :(
