public readable, public postable, free of tedious posts - pick 2
There are a _few_ very successful and generous traders who continue to contribute their hard won expertise on these boards. Taking things private wouldn't serve the purpose of helping those who are not already successful. Making threads read only except to pre-approved posters would stop new people asking genuine questions.
So we are left with trolls/derailment. The ignore list is a blunt instrument, needs continuously updated, isn't centralised/shared between members so the tedium of adding new members to the list is duplicated.
I'd suggest a moderated section. A user (or group of users is designated a moderator).
All posts within the section are queued in moderation prior to being displayed on the site.
The moderator can whitelist the known quality posters so their posts display immediately without moderator intervention and blacklist known timewasters so that their posts are not included in the moderation queue.
All other posts would be assessed on a case by case basis.
I'd be willing to volunteer some time to moderate this section on a trial basis. I would expect this to grow into a small group of 3-5 moderators who serve to save a little time and make participation less tedious for those higher on the food chain. Simply to pay respect to and acknowledge the value of certain posters who have contributed a great deal to this site but are having to wade through ignore lists, repetitive (and obvious) questions, and deliberate trolling.
Baron - you mentioned recently that unlike facebook your site is not a repository for worthless posts about feelings. Yet people who have worked at hedge funds, owned broker dealers, people who own a good percentage of the seats at a major exchange, and so on are routinely retorted to with comments such as to quote a recent example "the site doesn't give me the option so I'll do it manually - I dislike this post". They're not going to keep contributing and you'll be left with facebook.
It would only be a small corner of the site but there will be at least a few dozen of us who would appreciate the feature...and perhaps may even be willing to contribute towards development?
