I think Trane has pretty much nailed 'em decade by decade.

He has PM'd me to ask if I had any additions.

It is a hard list to improve on. Nothing stands out to me as a glaring omission.

But just to satisfy Trane's thirst for my input, I will say "CASINO" should qualify .... (yet it is somewhat unofficially covered by GOODFELLAS) Same can be said of RESERVOIR DOGS.

As an offbeat darkhorse, I would mention "The Taking of Pelham 123". Also, I would give an honorable mention to "3 Days of the Condor" which was a fine adaptation of the book "6 Days of the Condor"....a rare circumstance where somehow an abbreviated version of the original was, IMO an improvement. Also, a truly great book adaptation was "MARATHON MAN" which I thought had a better ending in the movie than in the book.

Yeah, MARTHON MAN, after a bit of further consideration, deserves to make the list as a main entry. Great adaptation, GREAT CAST AND ACTING. A winner!

the definitive word in movies? gimme a break.

i can understand someone else such a blunder, but YOU rs7?

how in the world could you EVER come to a consensus on something like that?

personally, i would immediately delete: spartacus (better then Ben Hur?), space odyssey, clockwork orange, deer hunter, the shining, once upon a time in america, the matrix, seven, the big lebowski.

i know a lot of those are some BIG NAMES, but what the hell, i reckon they suck. every critic and his dog will throw citizen kane at you, but i'll take a pass.

there were certainly more than only 5 or 6 memorable films from the 50s.. i just can't think of them right now.


(and although i enjoyed my 80s selections (in my thread) immensely, no i don't realy consider them great cinema. actually, there's probably 5 films in total made between 1980-2003 that i would consider truly great films. some of the rest do have some entertainment value... but there is SO MUCH typical hollywood crap to pander to the typical (deadbeat) moviegoer it just makes me sick... i don't even consider going to the cinema these days... unless there is a decent prospect of sex afterwards)

that was a nice film. what ruined for me was when hoffman threw the diamonds into the sewer.
i mean come on! sure, i can buy hoffman as a principled tree hugger, but it's just too much of a stretch for me to accept anyone just dumping that much $$...
