All Religions are corrupt after about 100 years after the founder's death. However, you do not have to be an atheist to see that.

Is their fear that god will somehow punish them because they didn't quite make the grade on earth?
The jewish god in particular is a marvelous god.
He creates humans, places them on this earth which is full of amazement, then roasts them in hell for eternity.
